Students qualify for national conference

A pair of Kewaunee High School students plan to attend the national conference of Future Business Leaders of America June 25 through July 1 in Anaheim, Calif.

Ben Kornowski, son of Charles and Kelly Kornowski, was elected Region III vice president of Wisconsin FBLA for the 2013-14 school year. His duties will include running the regional conference, representing the region on the state executive board, and communicating with all region chapters.

Kornowski also qualified to represent the state FBLA in the American Enterprise Project. In order to qualify, he co-wrote a report explaining the Encore Cafe, a school, community-based after-school restaurant organized and run collectively by three school organizations - FBLA, SKILLS USA and FACES.

The Encore Cafe helped to teach participating students economic and culinary skills and how to run a small business.

Paige Kassner qualified for the national conference in the Public Speaking I event. She wrote and presented a speech matching the goals of FBLA and took second place at the state competition. The speech was about the service project "Warm Hands, Warm Hearts," which has collected more than 14,000 winter weather items for the needy of Northeastern Wisconsin.

The school is working to raise support costs for the students and a chaperone for travel, room reservations, conference registration, and meals. For more information or to make a donation, contact Betty Schleis at (920) 388-2951, Ext. 107, or bschleis@kewaunee.k12.wi.us.
