One hour

Explore the Whiting Park Walking Trail, a 1.5-mile segment of the Green Circle Trail consisting mostly of woodchips (in the park) and some sidewalks. The trail winds through Upper Whiting Park, off of Highway HH, and features one of the earliest discovered Native American sites in north central Wisconsin. The scenic route winds through forests along the Plover River, and includes educational kiosks explaining the park's history and Indian Mounds. Parking is available at both Lower and Upper Whiting Park.

One day

Most people don't realize there are 11 state natural areas in Portage County to explore. Take the day and put one on your to-do list this summer. Start by exploring the 173-acre New Hope Pines with an old logging road perfect for hiking. The area features one of the largest and least disturbed northern dry-mesic forests remaining in central Wisconsin. From Stevens Point, take Highway 66 east to Highway Z, then take a left on Sunset Lake Road. A small parking area is available on the eastern side of the New Hope Pines State Natural Area, just off of Sunset Lake Road. Add a picnic and a stop at Sunset Lake to round out your day.
