Summer kickoff celebration draws thousands (with video)

After a long winter and late spring, more than 5,000 people jammed into Wausau's Oak Island Park on Friday for the city's official kickoff for the summer's season of entertainment.

The free celebration, organized by Wausau Area Events, included plenty of activities for all ages, including food, music and art projects. Wausau Area Events Director Kari Rasmussen said the annual event, which has been held for more than 20 years, is a way for friends and neighbors to reconnect and celebrate the start of the summer season.
