The Wisconsin State Horse Bowl competition 2013 was another successful year for the Fond du Lac County 4-H Horse Project.

The Fond du Lac County 4-H Equine education team participated in statewide competitions held in Wausau on May 4. The event included Horse Bowl and Hippology, where team members are quizzed on their knowledge of all aspects of equine science.

The Fond du Lac Senior Horse Bowl team took a top ten in their division. In addition, team captain Allison Opheim was top ten in individual high point. Other team members are Theresa Karrmann, Emily Franke, Kayla Kollmann, Diane Meister, and Kaelyn Ernst. The team is coached by Mary Karrmann and assisted by Elizabeth Karrmann.

The equine educational event is a fun way to increase the member's horse knowledge and gives them the opportunity to meet participants from counties around the state. Practices start in January and continue through May, where team members are instructed in the concepts of care and management of the horse. Several resources are used to give the members a thorough understanding of the history, physiology, and needs of the equine.

Team members also draw on their personal experiences of handling horses to further understand the material. The FDL County 4-H project also offers events in horse judging where members learn how to judge a horse's conformation and performance and members compete in a statewide judging competition in September.
