After decades of planning, a grant opportunity could provide local leaders with the funding they need to build a Highway 54 bypass in south Wood County.

The new initiative, known as the Surface Transportation Program-Freight, would allow the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to allocate federal funds to complete the construction of an eastside bypass from Highway W to Highway Z, Wood County Highway Commissioner Doug Passineau said.
