Dawson, Byrne excel as all-stars

Recent high school graduates Kayla Dawson and Brianna Byrne had big performances in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association all-star games at Wisconsin Dells last week.

De Pere High School alumnus Dawson scored a game-high 19 points for the North in its 65-51 loss to the South in the Division 1 girls game played Friday at JustAgame Fieldhouse.

Dawson made six of 15 shots from the floor and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Former Redbirds teammate Morgan Anderson contributed nine points for the North, which squandered a nine-point lead in the first half. Anderson made two 3-pointers.

In the Division 2 girls game Friday, Brianna Byrne dropped in 15 points to help the North squad beat the South 85-71.

Byrne, a De Pere resident who was a catalyst in the WIAA Division 2 girls basketball title won by Green Bay's Notre Dame Academy last season, was a perfect 7-of-7 on free throws in the all-star game.

Notre Dame head coach Sara Rohde served on the coaching staff for the Division 2 North team.

De Pere High School's strong contingent on the Division 1 North boys squad sustained an 87-75 loss to the South on Saturday.

The South outscored the North 34-18 in the final quarter.

De Pere alum Adam Beyer scored six points. Former Redbirds teammate Spencer Mocarski didn't have a point.

Redbirds head coach Brian Winchester had the same role for the North with a staff that included De Pere assistant Jeremy Boileau.
