Letter to the editor: Donation for bus use would be appropriate

To the editor:

I am a volunteer driver for the Commission on Aging and was recently in the office to deliver my paperwork. We were discussing the reduced funding they were getting from the government. I mentioned seeing the Commission on Aging buses at the big fishing tournament and assumed that they (the Commission) had received some kind of donation for allowing the use of the buses for that purpose.

I was shocked to learn that, although many organizations utilize these buses, there never seems to be any kind of donation to the Commission other than to refill the gas tanks. Refilling the gas tank is fine, but what about the wear and tear on the buses themselves? This fishing tournament was supposed to bring in a lot of money to the City of Oconto and its organizers can't seem to give even a small donation to help out the very organization that helps out the elderly in their community.

I contacted Mayor Bostedt about this situation but did not get the answer I was looking for. As a non-profit organization, the Commission cannot demand any kind of payment for the use of its buses. But as a private citizen, I would like to ask that people who take advantage of this very worthwhile organization consider some type of donation in return. It would seem to be the very least you could do.
