Letter to the editor: Rights are being eroded by government

To the editor:

In the June 12 edition, you quote the County Administrative Coordinator: "You're going to have to build a new facility, you have no choice."

The "you" must include all the citizens of Oconto County. Perhaps he is right. Perhaps the new jail will get built regardless of our opinions or opportunity of choice through a vote.

Clearly board members and other people involved in the effort to build a new jail near Oconto are searching out ways to exclude the voice - and rights - of the voters.

No surprise here. Politicians in Madison are trying to pass a law giving them access to the bank accounts - without the constitutional mandate of a warrant - of unemployed people.

The recently established trend in our state "no new taxes" government is to dramatically raise the hidden tax on our water bills. This paper brought that "alternate tax" to the attention of this reader and to others including some city council members.

At the federal level we find that our telephone calls are archived for possible future use against us.

People, THINK. If they get away with that they will eventually find a way (if it is not being done now) to discover and record everything we write in letters as well as electronic correspondence.

They do not have the right. Not for any of it. The trouble is, politicians in both the federal and state governments think they can pass any law they can think of regardless of its violation of basic civil rights.

If you are informed on our heritage of rights, rights the average American has no real knowledge of, you will know that much of what is happening in government today is so great a violation of those rights the offending legislators should be looked upon as criminals.

If the local politicians are able to spend tens of millions of our dollars and we cannot vote our preferences, but stand and look on only, then we in the hands of tyrants. At the federal and state levels we already are.
