Letter: Thanks to Wausau police, fire for helping me

Thanks to safety officials for helping me

EDITOR: There really is a silver lining in every cloud; especially if you're in Wausau. On Friday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend I traveled up to Lake Tomahawk and purchased a used pontoon boat. Driving back home, I looked in my rear view mirror and saw thick, black smoke coming from underneath the boat I had just purchased.

Traffic was heavy, as you can imagine. I went into panic mode. I was absolutely terrified. I somehow managed to pull on the shoulder of the road and call 911. The 911 operator dispatched the fire and police departments. Within just a few minutes, they were there. The Fire Department checked under the boat to access what had happened. It turned out the boat had shifted off the trailer just enough for it to scrape one of the tires. After further examination of the boat and trailer they determined that all four tires on the trailer were bad and it wasn't safe to haul. The firemen strapped down the boat so we could get off the highway.

Officer Shawn Pierschalla and Lt. Douglas Flory helped me get to Fleet Farm. I couldn't believe what a thorough job they did. Things could have turned out much worse had they not checked all of the tires. When we arrived at Fleet Farm, Pierschalla stayed with me to make sure they would be able to replace my tires.

Hats off to both of them for their kindness and efforts above and beyond the call of duty.

Nickie Deppe,
