One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for nonprofit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.

Wood County Transportation Program: Volunteer drivers are needed Monday through Friday to transport elderly and disabled adult clients to and from medical appointments. Volunteers must have valid Wisconsin driver's license and proof of current insurance. Pass Wood County criminal background check and satisfactory review of driving record.

Homelessness Initiative: Volunteers are needed for a Homeless Point-in-Time (PIT) Count that will be held July 31 from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. Volunteers will be assigned an area in Wisconsin Rapids and the surrounding area and will travel in groups of three volunteers (one volunteer will be an auxiliary or part-time police officer). Volunteers will conduct interviews with participating homeless people and offering information about resources that can help. A minimum of 24 volunteers are needed to form eight teams of three. Volunteers should be at least 18 years old. Volunteers do not need any related skills but will be required to attend a training (date and location to be determined); and will need to fill out an application. There will be minimal walking and volunteer may need to provide his/her own transportation. Volunteers need to dress appropriately for the weather and bring along a flash light. Vest and any other supplies that will be needed will be provided.

Family Center: We are looking for one or a couple of volunteers who would be willing to help out with lawn care and yard work this summer. Duties would include, but are not limited to, mowing, weeding, raking, and tending to our gardens. We also are looking for someone to help with power washing and staining our fence. Need to be friendly and outgoing. Confidentiality is important. Must be able to pass a background check.

Growing Friends Wisconsin Rapids Community Gardens: Volunteers are needed for the following positions: co-leaders who facilitate garden activities and meetings; garden coordinator who organizes spring registration; a treasurer who collects fees; communications representative who writes the newsletter, etc.; events/outreach/community relations coordinators; leadership team members; grounds crew volunteers to maintain the area; garden helpers who assist the gardeners with their plots; and horticulture advisers to share information.
