Beer Man: Strong flavored Redd's Apple Ale fails as an ale

Redd's Apple Ale is proof of the power of massive advertising.

Ever since a Redd's television commercial appeared during the Super Bowl, I've had many people - none of them craft beer drinkers - asking me whether I had reviewed it yet and what I thought of it. So the awareness was there, although it was interesting that none of the people felt compelled enough to buy it and try some themselves.

The beer is supposedly a golden ale with "natural apple flavor," as it states on the label - not "fermented with apples" or "with apple juice." I take the term to mean Redd's contains a flavor that is like a natural apple, which means it could be derived from a test tube, not an actual apple. And don't forget the other ingredient listed on the label - "caramel color." Really? There are breweries that still do that?

To its credit, Redd's does have an OK apple flavor, but more in the realm of grocery store sweet apple juice. It does not taste like biting into a fresh apple. The beverage fails miserably in the ale department, with no head and no hint of malt or hops. It doesn't even taste like a Miller with apple added to it. Its profile is more like a cider. In other words, a beer for those who don't like beer.

The 5 percent ABV Redd's is more a product for those who drink beverages such as Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy or Mike's Hard Lemonade. But with so many good apple ciders on the market right now from Angry Orchard, Crispin's, Strongbow, Woodchuck, etc., it would be better to just buy a cider than a cider-tasting sort-of beer.

Even Miller seems unsure of the beverage, since the Redd's website has absolutely no information on the product, just a home page and a locator link. However, since it is a Miller product, it can be found virtually everywhere in the country.
