Prep basketball: WIAA adds mercy rule for lopsided games

Boys and girls basketball, like several other sports including football, baseball and hockey, will have a mercy rule next season.

The WIAA Board of Control unanimously approved Thursday the implementation of a mercy rule for varsity basketball games.

The game clock will not stop once the point differential reaches 40 points at any time after the conclusion of the third quarter, unless a timeout is called. Even if the score subsequently dips below 40 points, the running clock will remain in effect until the game ends. ...
