Though slow to start, strawberry season promises big, bountiful berries

Patience is a virtue when it comes to this year's strawberry crop.

As of Wednesday some berry picking venues opened their doors, but on a limited basis. Others are watching the sweet fruit ripen on the vine with the promise of a boatload by the end of next week.

The cooler temps, especially at night, have delayed the season, but the bright red berries are on the way, said Dave Mischler, who operates Mischler Berry Farm in Waupun. His 15 acres of strawberry plants are awaiting a few more sunny days. ...
