The numbers aren't anywhere near where anglers would like to see them yet but the size of the chinooks hooked on Lake Michigan has been a pleasant surprise so far this season.

This year's slower start numbers-wise is more typical of the way things used to be: take what you get for salmon while they're biting, then focus the rest of the trip on rainbow or lake trout.

Anglers have been often spoiled in the past decade with chinooks smacking already in May, and spectacular catches of salmon and steelhead in June. ...
