A hunting cabin located on Black Alder Road in the town of Merrill was destroyed by fire this morning, according to a Merrill Fire Department press release.

Firefighters from Merrill and Pine River responded to the blaze, which was reported just before 9 a.m. As firefighters drove toward the cabin, they could see black smoke rising above the trees, and by the time they arrived, the walls of the one-story 20-foot by 40-foot structure had fallen and the shack was engulfed in flames. A pond on the property was used for the water supply.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There was no electricity running to the cabin, but lightning strikes were reported in the area, according to the press release. Firefighters were at the scene for about three hours.
