The Merrill Fire Department has been selected to receive an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. The money will be used to purchase three new advanced life saving cardiac monitor/defibrillators.

The grant's purpose is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters. The allocation of awards is a competitive process; awards are determined based on an applicant's ability to both address program priorities and provide the most compelling justification for their need.

The Merrill Fire Department was seeking funding to replace three aging and obsolete monitors/defibrillators, one for each of the paramedic ambulances in Merrill. The new equipment will be industry standard, incorporating new technology and improving patients' care before they reach the hospital.

The new equipment will allow Merrill's EMS service to meet current medical directives within its region and bring it into compliance with standards set forth by the American Heart Association, the National Fire Protection Association, the Food & Drug Administration and the U.S. Homeland Security Capabilities list.

The new equipment costs just over $100,000; 90 percent will be paid through the grant and the remaining 10 percent being local match money. To date this is the single largest grant the Merrill Fire Department has been awarded through the AFG program.
