Tupa stands out in big softball tourney
Acacia Tupa was one of 24 players selected to the Top Gun All-American team at the Top Gun 16U fastpitch softball tournament held recently in Kansas City, Mo.
The team was selected by the coaches during the four-day tournament, which included 24 teams from 13 different states.
Tupa had five singles, three doubles, six RBIs and seven stolen bases for the Junior Phoenix, a club team from the Green Bay area. Tupa, who's going to be a junior at Southern Door High School, also made 13 catches in the outfield with no errors and threw out a runner at home plate.
WIAA enacts mercy rule for basketball
A mercy rule for varsity boys and girls basketball games was approved Thursday by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control and will be implemented during the 2013-14 school year.
A running clock will start once the score differential reaches 40 points at any time after the conclusion of the third quarter. It will remain in effect until the conclusion of the game even if the score differential dips below 40 points.
In other action, the board approved a recommendation that mandates three-person officiating crews for all WIAA boys and girls basketball playoff games at regional, sectional and state levels.
Kita off to hot start with traveling team
Nick Kita is batting .520 through his first eight games with the Wisconsin All-Stars traveling baseball team.
Kita, who will be a senior at Gibraltar High School, has two doubles, a home run and eight RBIs. Kita plays infield for the team, which is currently playing in a tournament in Omaha, Neb.
