Like the Wisconsin State Fair needed any more incentive to come up with even more outrageous foods, but nevertheless, here it is.
The Sporkies, a first-time food competition for fair vendors, has eight finalists going napkin-to-napkin for the honor of winning one of three Golden Spork Awards next month. The idea was to get vendors to amp up the creativity of a new food item to be served at this year's fair Aug. 1-11 in West Allis.
The eight finalists in the running are: Cajun Mac-n-Cheese (Tropics at the Fair), Deep-Fried Peanut Butter & Bacon Nuggets with Berry Weiss Jelly (Saz's), Iced Irish Coffee Float (Slim McGinn's Irish Pub), Mac Attack (West Allis Shrine Club), Mela Fritta Gelato On-a-Stick (La Coppa Gelato), Rasta Shrimp Sliders (Tropics at the Fair), Slaw-Tered Chicken (Island Noodles) and the Thanksgiving Waffle (Slim McGinn's West).
A panel of celebrity judges will name a winner in the categories of Best Tasting, Most Creative and Grand Champion on July 30. Among the five taste testers is Green Bay Packers nose tackle Gilbert Brown, who we're pretty sure knows a little something about eating.
All eight entries will be available at the fair.
