Letters to the Editor: Schraa's firearms bill lacking in sense

5:39 PM, Jun. 21, 2013  |  Comments

Regarding Rep. Schraa's Firearms Protective Act: it does not sound as though Rep. Schraa has a grasp of our Government systems. He has cited "unconstitutional" measures but does not seem to have any qualifications to judge constitutionality, nor any reason to back or present a bill like this, since he is "not a great gun guy."

So why is he introducing this mish-mash of a bill, and whose agenda does it represent? Does he even know? No one needs semi-automatic weapons for protection, target shooting, or hunting in a civil society. The bill seems disjointed, lacking in sense, and attempts to enforce his will upon the government, without any knowledge or consideration of our laws. Many constitutional lawyers have debated gun rights without resolving the issue. That said, what does he think this will accomplish?

As Quakers, we understand civil disobedience. This is outright defiance of Federal laws, not civil disobedience. This usually results in arrests, the use of force, violence and lawsuits. We don't believe that electing any legislator should cause this.

It is expensive enough to put proposals into laws: Who will pay for our lawyers if our state is taken to court over this Mr. Schraa? As taxpayers, we don't want to. We already have enough laws to protect our citizens' gun rights we don't need to waste our legislators' time and our taxpayers' money making more making more poorly crafted laws like this one.
