In this matter-of-fact book, written by the co-author of the iconic "What to Expect when You're Expecting" book, Heidi Murkoff presents a similarly helpful guide addressing siblings' most-asked questions. What do new babies look like? Why do they cry so much? Can I help take care of them? Cartoony illustrations and simple, child-friendly answers make this an accessible book for both parents and curious children. Welcoming a new baby can be stressful, but addressing the inevitable questions before the baby is born might help ease the transition. Also available in the series is "What to Expect When Mommy's Having a Baby." Recommended for preschoolers.

Children's Picture Books

"Lola Reads to Leo" by Anna McQuinn

Part of a continuing picture book series about Lola, the little girl prepares to become a big sister; she readies the baby's room and chooses the books she will read to her sibling. When her baby brother arrives, she helps mommy and daddy with reading, bathing and singing. Being a big sister is a big job, but it's one Lola comes to love. A playfully illustrated multicultural title excellent for any sibling-to-be.

"Waiting for Baby" by Harriet Ziefert

Ziefert is a master of creating books appropriate for the youngest readers. This book follows a week of little Max waiting and waiting for the new baby, focusing on the things that keep him busy-like drumming, playing ball and even talking to his mom's belly on a walkie-talkie, "Hey baby?I'm tired of waiting for you!" Finally, the day arrives, and the last page closes with an illustration of a loving family welcoming the new baby at the hospital. A great story to address the waiting game, which can seem very long for little children.
