The tale of Joey and Albert in "War Horse" sounds like a familiar wartime coming-of-age story: two childhood friends who are inseparable must unwillingly part ways when unfortunate and unseen circumstances wrench one away from the other.

The difference in this show - playing through Sunday at Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton - is that Joey is a farm horse in World War I-era England and Albert is the youth who cares for him.

The very human connection between the two characters carries the show, and communicates important messages about the nature and power of friendship. ...
