City considers 'pay as you throw' garbage service

The city of Wausau is considering implementing a "pay as you throw" garbage service program as early as 2015.

Currently, fees for the city's garbage service are included in property taxes. Under a pay as you throw system, the city would likely reduce property taxes, said Wausau Finance Committee member Jim Brezinski. The switch would be revenue-neutral for the city.

Advantages of PAYT include increased recycling and composting, less waste and charging people fees based on how much trash they generate instead of the size of their home. ...
