The city of De Pere laid off a paid firefighter and all paid-on-call firefighters for three months in 2012 as a cost-control measure, but did not eliminate a full-time firefighting position. The laid-off firefighter was reinstated in March and immediately began a paid medical leave. The paid-on-call firefighters were returned to the budget in mid-April. A story that appeared online Monday and in the Tuesday print edition was unclear.
