Dan Higgins column: Let the berry rush begin

My favorite season is strawberry, which is finally upon us.

Talk to Moders Gardens owner Arnie Moder and he'll tell you it's about as late of a strawberry season as you're going to see. Which follows last year's season which was about as early (and terrible) as we will get in this part of Wisconsin.

Some pick-your-own places were open last weekend while others, like Moders, opened up earlier this week with the peak of the season expected to hit next week.

Despite the late start, Moder says he has a bumper crop and - depending on weather conditions -could see the season running as late as July 20.

Can I get a whoo-hoo? (Or more appropriately, a can of whip cream?)

Strawberries are a top 5 fruit as far as I'm concerned - along side pineapple, raspberries, black berries and peaches - but it's not enough to convince me that it is fun to pick your own. I'm more of a pick it up kind of guy, as in 'Honey, I'm going to the store, do you want me to pick up some strawberries?'

Fortunately, the farmers markets are packed with fresh strawberries and there are plenty of small stands to get your fix.

Moders will even sell fresh-picked strawberries at a stand at Bay Park Square Mall this year. It will be open seven days a week. Hours aren't set, because they will pick the strawberries that morning, then sell them later in the day until they are sold out.

Whether you're of the the pick-my-own or pick-it-up persuasion, there's little denying the appeal of this symbol of summer.

If you insist on doing the work yourself, here are a few options. (This is not meant to be a complete list.)
