June 29, 1949 - Legion votes to buy synagogue: A decision to buy the Cnesses Israel property at the corner of Pine and Jackson streets for a clubhouse was made by Sullivan-Wallen post, American Legion, at a meeting Tuesday night.

The Legion already has an option on the property. Occupancy will not take place for more than a year, until the construction of a new synagogue by the Cnesses Israel congregation.

According to Legion officials, the Legion will be allowed small quarters in the current building, on Walnut Street, until that time when the county moves several of its offices into it. The building is owned by the county and has been used by the Legion for more than two decades. The county board refused to renew its lease with the Legion because of heavy overcrowding in the courthouse.
