Wausau-area private schools consider a future with vouchers

Wausau-area parents hoping to take advantage of the imminent statewide expansion of the private school voucher program for next school year face plenty of roadblocks.

Private schools across the state, such as Newman Catholic Schools in Wausau, have until July 26 to sign up for the program, which was expanded earlier this month by the state Legislature. Participation in the program outside of Milwaukee and Racine for all but 13 schools is capped at 500 low-income students next school year and 1,000 the next year.
