Area's Great Lakes beaches cleaner than state average

A new study finds that Great Lakes beaches in Brown, Door, Kewaunee and Marinette counties were among the best in the state for low water-contamination levels in 2012, but the state as a whole did not score well.

Overall, 14 percent of water samples taken at Wisconsin beaches on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior exceeded standards for bacterial contamination, ranking the state second worst in the nation, according to the analysis by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
