The Wausau Area Fourth of July Celebration got its start when Wausau city officials asked the Jaycees to host an event to keep residents off the road and safe during the busy holiday. Now, more than six decades later, it's a huge Independence Day celebration.

The Wausau Area Jaycees will host its 68th annual Fourth of July celebration Wednesday through Sunday at Marathon Park. This year's event brings the return of many favorites - a demolition derby, live music, a petting zoo and carnival rides - and includes a fireworks show at dusk on Thursday.
