Readers React: Issue of what is public is complex

This is a very difficult issue. Trust me, we do not want to have to sit and black everything out and mute names from video. But we are at risk of huge lawsuits for releasing information obtained from driver's license records. We have had to change several of our practices to protect ourselves. If you don't like it, I suggest you contact lawmakers and make a change.

- Luis Lopes-Serrao, Kronenwetter Police Department

Don't blame the police or the departments for the way public records are being handled. It's a current ruling they have to abide by. They're just doing what they have been told they have to do.

- Matt Waid, Merrill Police Department

While I support the public's right to know, we also have the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. The identities and personal information (of witnesses and others not charged with crimes) also should not be publicized, in my opinion.

- Ericka Loften Pardun

This is how some other countries hold people in custody indefinitely and no one knows they are there because they don't give out names. Right now the news media can use booking records to find who got arrested, but I can imagine we'll soon see a reason given for those records being redacted as well. Then what? No public records of who has been arrested, no public records of who is being held. The bigger picture as a result of this ridiculous court ruling is much more frightening.

Why can't you wait till the person is bound over for trial before you start the circus? People are innocent until found guilty and lives have been ruined because of an overzealous media.

- Russ Schleicher

Wausau already has a gossip mill that runs at peak efficiency and there are enough people in the city willing to spread libel and slander about those who are accused of crimes.

- Ashley Nigl

The public has a right to know, period.

- Mark Lechnir

Are you feeding people's morbid curiosity or is there a greater purpose in knowing identifying information? Can giving out that information hurt the victims or the victims' family? Can giving out that info hurt the suspect's family? Who should be the person who decides what to redact or how to use the information?
