Much happens at Portage County Public Library during July. See what awaits you:
July marks the halfway point of our summer reading program, and we have many exciting events. Children and teens participate in various special events to earn prizes. Adults can submit book reviews to enter to win the adult summer reading program grand prize. All of the library's programs are free and open to all, so come in and visit the library!
Great Scott and the Magical Archaeology Adventure will be at the main library in Stevens Point and at the Plover library on July 12. Free tickets are available for the Stevens Point show by calling 715-346-1549, and tickets for the Plover show are available from the Plover library by calling 715-341-4007.
The other big event that we are proud to feature is Music for Kids with Dave Landau on July 26. This program will take place at Sentry Theater and free tickets for the event are available from all libraries beginning July 8.
Teens will enjoy the opportunity to kayak on July 25 during our kayaking program overseen by Divepoint Scuba. On Aug. 1 teens and adults are invited to meet Maria Knier, author of the "The Empathic Egg."
Formerly from Stevens Point, currently from Minneapolis, author Carolyn Boehlke will discuss her new book "Chasing the Moon" in a program at 6 p.m. July 11 in the Pinery Room. The book tells the story of Nadia Alvarez, a 15-year-old immigrant girl from Mexico who finds herself torn between two cultures and countries. Copies of the book will be available for sale. Please join us.
PCPL will again be a drop-off site for Project Fresh Start from July 12 to Aug. 12. This is the school supply drive that provides children who qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program with free school supplies. More than 3,000 kindergarten through 12th-grade students in Portage County are eligible to receive these supplies, everything from pencils to backpacks. Collected supplies will be dropped off for distribution to students on Aug. 20. The need is great. Please donate if you can.
The library will hold its annual book sale July 18 and 19 in the Pinery Room. Thursday hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enter and exit the Main Street doors to the Pinery Room, as sale hours are different from public hours at the library. There will be bargains galore! Come one and all!!
Author Jeffrey Vollmer will present a reading/discussion of his new book "Faded Gray" at 2 p.m. July 25 in the Pinery Room. Vollmer calls his book an adult thriller, which features a young man in the Peace Corps who gets caught up in some criminal activity. All are welcome to this free program. Copies of the book will be available for sale.
See you at the library.
