Washington Island dredging can proceed

State Rep. Garey Bies who represents Door and Kewaunee counties in the Wisconsin Assembly, said Tuesday he is most pleased that $5.2 million emergency funding for dredging for Washington Island remained in the state's 2013-2015 budget when Gov. Scott Walker signed it Sunday.

Bies, R-Sister Bay, said he faced some opposition from lawmakers who accused him of wanting "pork" for one little town in his own district. But with Lake Michigan hitting record low water levels this winter and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers predicting levels will remain low, he said the consequence of not dredging ...
