Prison term ordered after ninth OWI conviction

A Sturgeon Bay man will spend up to six years in prison after being convicted Monday of his eighth and ninth drunken driving offenses.

Door County Circuit Judge Peter Diltz gave Lawrence H. Bergsland, 58, the minimum mandatory sentence of three years in prison for each offense. The sentences are consecutive, with an additional seven years of extended supervision after he is released.

Bergsland had five prior convictions for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Maryland starting in 1989. He had two other OWI convictions in Door County in 2007. On June 25 of last year, he was stopped ...
