Oshkosh Common Council opted for Friday fireworks to save money

The Oshkosh Common Council decided to push the city's Independence Day fireworks display from July 4 to July 5 in order to save money on police overtime costs.

Councilors voted to assume responsibility for half the $25,000 cost of the the annual fireworks display on December 11, 2012, as part of an effort to help reduce Sawdust Days' special event costs for the five-day festival this year.

In doing so, councilors also sought to save taxpayers some money by scheduling the fireworks for 9:45 p.m. Friday to avoid paying Oshkosh Police officers a higher, holiday wage. ...
