Sargent honored as Scholar-Athlete
Tara Sargent, a volleyball player from De Pere, was among 39 student-athletes from Clarke (Iowa) University to be named a 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.50 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and achieved junior academic status.
Sargent, who graduated from Clarke this year with a double major in mathematics and business, played for the Crusaders women's volleyball team all four years in college. The 2009 De Pere High School graduate was a defensive specialist/libero at Clarke.
Earlier this year, Sargent was named the recipient of the 2013 Midwest Collegiate Conference Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award.
The award recognizes a student-athlete who excels in athletics and academics and is committed to the Champions of Character program's five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
Holiday road race at St. Norbert College
St. Norbert College in De Pere will hold the inaugural Firecracker Run/Walk starting at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 4.
The race will follow a 4-mile route close to the St. Norbert campus, starting and finishing at Donald J. Schneider Stadium on Lost Dauphin Road.
All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Awards will be given to the top overall and age-group finishers.

Sign-up starts July 15 for fall softball
The De Pere Park, Recreation & Forestry Department will be taking registration for its fall softball league beginning Monday, July 15.
Registration packets for the league are available in person at De Pere Community Center, 600 Grant St., or online at www.de-pere.org.
The fall league being offered is men's 12-inch slow pitch, which will play on Tuesdays at VFW Park starting Aug. 20.
The team fee is $105. Player fees are $16 for city of De Pere residents and $35 for non-residents.
Registration will start at 8 a.m. July 15 and go until 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2. Registration can be done by mail, at De Pere Community Center or by email.

Packers football camp July 15-19
A Green Bay Packers Youth Football Camp for ages 6 to 14 will be held Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19, at Green Bay East High School.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The camp provides non-contact instruction at different skill levels and is led by professional coaches and former Packers players. Among the "Green Bay Packers Heroes" who have been camp instructors are John Anderson, Ahman Green, Johnnie Gray, Dexter McNabb, Bryce Paup and Bill Schroeder.
Other camp features are an NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition and championship on the final day, as well as awards and prizes presented throughout the week.
