Letters: Immigration is a top priority

4:23 PM, Jul. 3, 2013  |  Comments

Our country is and always has been a nation of immigrants. That is why there is no higher priority for the labor movement, this year, than to see a workable immigration system that allows millions of aspiring Americans to become citizens. We need to ensure that we move forward and create a roadmap to citizenship.

An overwhelming majority of the Senate voted for such a measure. This represents a big step toward ending the deportation crisis that has wrecked families, communities and workplaces for far too long. The Senate bill allows undocumented workers and their families to come out from the shadows, lift themselves out of poverty and be recognized for their contributions to society.

The only obstacle between America and a comprehensive immigration system is House Republicans. Speaker John Boehner and his leadership team face a dilemma. If they continue to block the path to citizenship for a large growing portion of the country, they could face electoral decline, on the national level, for years to come.

America is ready for immigration reform, ready for citizenship and ready for equality.
