The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday designated 24 Wisconsin counties as natural disaster areas because of freezing and thawing cycles this winter and spring.

Included were Brown, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette and Oconto counties. The primary crop loss was alfalfa, though some winter wheat and perennial grasses were affected. Farmers in 24 contiguous counties also could qualify for assistance.

The assistance consists of low-interest loans for farmers who qualify. Farmers have eight months to apply for loans to cover actual losses.

Information is available at disaster.fsa.usda.gov.
