Letter: We must escape the wrong desires

Money and sex are motivators. People will do almost anything for money, like fetch $20 bill out of a bucket of pig manure so big you have to swim in it to retrieve anything. Sex, too, is always on our minds, and it comes in perverted forms, too, without a pledge of lasting love. Pornography, which is a form of idolatry, is everywhere.

Siddhartha said our house is on fire with desire and we must escape. The wrong desires are greed and lust, but not every desire is evil. How do we escape?

First, we must acknowledge that we are sinners. Then the blood of Jesus frees us from guilt and sin. We are saved, not by the things we do, although we should try to do good things, but by the grace of Jesus. His sacrifice of his life for us shows us that we are loved and the resurrection guarantees victory.

It is a race.

Unfortunately, many of us are racing in the wrong direction - toward hellfire. Seek instead the fire of the holy spirit to make you a new creation.

Some who glances at this will say, "That's irrevelant to me," "I don't care about it," "So what," "I've heard that before and no one takes it seriously anymore."

But look at what is happening to society: Half our marriages end in divorce. Half the children born to women younger than 30 are born to single mothers. How sad is divorce and how hard it is to be a single mother. The family has collapsed in plain view among us.

And war is the chronic pestilence visited upon an unruly people.

I'd like to close by adding that human life is sacred from conception - not all forms of birth control are wrong - and abortion takes a human life and all human life is sacred.
