EDITOR: The Associated Press recently reported that the "Big Ten Conference's female athlete of the year award no longer is named for the Olympic track star from Wisconsin who later acknowledged working as a prostitute. Big Ten spokesman Scott Chipman said Tuesday that Suzy Favor Hamilton's name was removed from the award after discussions between the league and Wisconsin."

What is wrong with this picture? Isn't the Big Ten supposed to be an athletic conference - not a puritanical behavior enforcement agency? And why wouldn't the University of Wisconsin stand up for its medal-winning alumnus?

Favor Hamilton didn't cheat on the track or use performance-enhancing drugs. She made us proud. Frankly, bringing down more than $600 an hour as an escort over the age of 40 is also something to be proud of, in my humble opinion.

As long as she didn't hurt or cheat anyone, what did she do wrong to be insulted by the so-called Big Ten, long after her retirement from the sport? Shame on them!
