Strawberry farms having 'exceptional' season (with video)

Central Wisconsin strawberry fans have one to two weeks left to fill their fridges and freezers before this year's late crop is gone, farmers say.

The strawberry season got off to a late start because of the wet spring and early summer - most local farms opened the last few days of June instead of the typical mid-June opening.

But it was that same wet spring that made this season a success, if a late one, said Jeannine Matushak, co-owner of Mike's Berries in Stettin and Engleberry Farm in Merrill. The plants loved the extra rain the Wausau area received this spring - 1.5 inches more than normal in June ...
