A portion of College Avenue was closed to traffic Monday morning after a roof collapse at Sign Works, 809 W. College Ave.

An employee was inside the business when the roof started to cave in around 9 a.m. Monday, but escaped unharmed, said Appleton police Sgt. Dave Lund.

Rain likely caused the collapse, Lund said. The city experienced record rains Monday with 2.18 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

The Appleton Fire Department was checking the building and others on the block for structural damage, Lund said.
