Letter: Drivers, bicyclists need to look out for each other, obey laws

We can all share the roads together

EDITOR: As a person who bikes frequently around the Wausau area, it concerned me greatly to read a recent letter stating that it is a constant battle for drivers to give the road the attention it deserves. As a bicyclist, it flusters me to hear that it is a struggle for some drivers not to text or make a quick call while driving. Texting while driving is against the law for all drivers in Wisconsin. Since bicycles are defined as vehicles under Wisconsin state statute, the same texting-while-driving law applies to any person riding a bicycle.

For any vehicle operator, there should be nothing that detracts you from giving the road the attention it deserves.

Unfortunately, it is the jaywalking pedestrian, precarious bicyclist or angry motorist who we seem to remember. I have encountered many friendly motorists who provide well in excess of the three-feet minimum when passing me on my bicycle. I've seen many gracious pedestrians move aside on multiuse paths, offering passing bicyclists a friendly wave. More and more bicyclists are riding on the right side of the road in the same direction as traffic, wearing helmets and using hand signals at intersections.

Whether you're a person walking, bicycling, or driving a motor vehicle, please be aware of and obey all traffic laws. Our community should be a place we can all enjoy, whether we're traveling on foot, riding a bicycle or driving a motor vehicle.

If we all look out for each other and obey traffic laws, our streets can and will be safer for everyone.
