Family members of a woman who died after wandering out of her assisted living facility in Appleton have filed a lawsuit against the business, claiming its negligence caused her death.

Delores Wiersum, 85, had been living in The Heritage, 2600 S. Heritage Woods Drive, for almost six months before she died. On Jan. 17, an Appleton police sergeant found her lying on the sidewalk in a pool of blood less than a mile away from the facility, according to the complaint. She died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital around 5:06 a.m.
