APPLETON — Tips from the community led to an arrest Wednesday in a July 5 wallet theft at an Appleton gas station.

A 54-year-old Appleton man is accused of taking another customerís wallet that was left on the counter of a W. Wisconsin Avenue store, the Appleton Police Department said today.

The department released surveillance video Tuesday and asked the public for help in identifying the man caught pocketing the wallet on camera. The video was featured by Post-Crescent Media on www.postcrescent.com.

The tips helped an Appleton police sergeant track down the man, who admitted to having the wallet. Police said he has a criminal history in several states that includes convictions of attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping, robbery and auto theft.

The suspect was taken to Outagamie County Jail and is expected to make his initial appearance this afternoon before the Outagamie County Court Commissioner.
