NewPage building supply plant in Upper Michigan

NewPage Corp. and Omya, a producer of industrial minerals, have entered into a long-term supply agreement to build a precipitated calcium carbonate plant at the NewPage Escanaba paper mill site.

The project will create seven new jobs, NewPage said in a statement. PCC is a raw material used in the papermaking process, which enhances brightness and whiteness.

The Escanaba mill purchases PCC from another supplier. With a plant on-site, the mill will save on transportation costs, the company said.

NewPage closed its Kimberly paper mill in September 2008, but still has operations in Wisconsin.
