Michaeleen Erickson has been interested in gardening since she was a young child, and when she moved into her town of Rudolph home after she and her husband, Gary, were married in 1979, she found a blank slate with which to work.

"My husband built the house in 1977, and it had been a hay meadow from a family farm," Erickson said. "There was one maple tree on the property at the time."

Erickson began working on the landscape in 1980, and the two islands that she first created still remain. ...
