Mortgage rates likely to stay low

Rising numbers have been driven by market panic

The average U.S. rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage reached a two-year high this week.

Mortgage giant Freddie Mac reported Thursday the current 4.51 percent rate average is up from 4.29 percent last week. Experts say rates have been rising on expectations the Federal Reserve will slow its bond purchases this year.

Those purchases have kept rates low as part of an overall effort to stimulate economic activity. The yield on the 10-year Treasury, which mortgage rates typically track, has been rising. ...
