It happened in late winter, my encounter with the barred owl.

Early one morning, I looked out the window and was surprised to see a huge owl on top of the bird feeder. Later as I described him to my husband; I learned that he was a barred owl. A barred owl is more than a foot in height. He sat majestically on top of the feeder, no doubt looking for some bird to capture with his talons.

When you see a bird of this kind in the woods, you know you are encroaching in its territory. Entering the woods should tell us that we are not the dominant creature but are rather like interlopers who come to visit but should not ...
