Volunteering isn't always a lengthy, on-going commitment. Knowing summer can be a whirlwind of activities, consider getting involved in just one of many community events scheduled this summer. The time commitment is minimal, you'll have the opportunity to meet and work with other giving people, and have a hand in the success of an important community event. Plus, many summer volunteer opportunities are suitable for the whole family to get involved with. Here's a sampling of upcoming family-friendly events:

? Wausau Whitewater events. The American Canoe Association's 2013 Open Canoe Slalom Nationals & North American Championships will be July 12 through July 14 at the Wausau Whitewater park near downtown Wausau. Help with scoring, timing, judging, safety, merchandise sales, registration or other needed tasks. Another big whitewater event will take place Aug. 17 and Aug. 18.

? Guys Who Grill. The YWCA's popular annual event needs general help and licensed bartenders for July 28.

? Big Bull Falls Log Jam. Assist at this theme-based re-enactment of life for the early settlers and loggers held Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 in Mosinee.

? Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Assist with registration, water stations, the survivorship celebration, greeting at finish line and more, Aug. 11.

? Fresh Air Guide at Mount View Care Center. Take residents out for a "stroll" (in wheelchairs) to enjoy the summer breeze and beautiful, landscaped grounds. Times available to fit your schedule.
