A Rothschild couple returned home from vacation July 9 to find their home smoldering and firefighters trying to snuff the fire that eventually destroyed the house.

Lawrence and Marilyn Smith were out of town Tuesday morning when fire broke out in their two-story house in the 700 block of Leon Street. As of July 9, the cause of the blaze, which left one firefighter recovering from heat-related injuries, remained unclear.

Acting Rothschild Fire Chief Glen Engebretson said the fire appeared to have started in the home's lower level, perhaps the basement. A passer-by in the neighborhood ...
