Authorities report West Nile virus found in Wood County

A dead blue jay found July 1 in Wood County tested positive for West Nile virus, the Wood County Health Department announced Monday.

The bird, which was found in south Wood County, is the first that tested positive for the virus in Wood County since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1, said Sue Kunferman, Wood County Health Department director.

Residents should take steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites, Kunferman said. People should limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. They should apply insect repellant to ...
